You can now watch my short movie Butterfly which was filmed last year and got me the award for best local director. For those that do not know what the film "Butterfly" is about, it tells the story of this butterfly which goes through a series of events and these events mirror events that we ourselves experience in our life. The story is told through the medium of dance.
You can check out the short movie here. Thanks.
On the 15th September 2012, at an awards night for the Malta International Short Film Festival, I won the "Best Local Director" award for my short "Butterfly". It was such an amazing night and I am so happy that the judges appreciated my effort and gave me such a prestigious (and heavy) award :)
I would like to thank all those who always believed in my talent, especially to my family and to Christina Cauchi who embarked with me on this project. Thanks.
Filming of "The Balance" is ready. It's been a tough 4 hour shoot in the limits of Siggiewi. None of this could have happened if it were not for the main actor Ian Galea and the other actors: Jesmond Darmanin, Roderick Vella Cesare, Jeanette Debono and Bernard Camilleri. Helping me out on the shoot were also Marlon Caruana (who helped me out on casting too), Jeanette Debono (assisted me all the way and took care of the actors) and Roderick & Melchior Vella Cesare who are always there to give me hand. A special thanks goes to the Vella Cesare brothers who lent me their camcorder as mine broke 3 hours before shooting!!
Since I cannot put the whole short movie online, I figured I could instead put up a teaser trailer, just to give you an idea of what this fairytale looks like. One problem I encountered when I was cutting this trailer was that I could only use the first half of the short as otherwise I would have spoiled the whole thing. :)
Ir-Ragel li Jaghmel is-Shab (The Cloudmaker) was screened at the Saint James Cavalier cinema in Valletta for the 2008 edition of the Malta National Film Competition. The award for the best acting performance was given to William Vella for his performance in The Cloudmaker. Congratulations William!!
He really deserves the award. William managed to portray a dreamy character obsessed with the clouds in the sky and that was far from an easy task!
The Cloudmaker is my latest short movie. It tells the story of a young innocent kid obsessed with clouds and on a mission to find out the man who makes all those clouds in the sky. The Cloudmaker is part drama and part fantasy tale and it stars young William Vella.
Filmed during last March with a three month post-production, The Cloudmaker was the most difficult movie I have ever done. I had to wait for cloudy days to film and it took like forever for a cloud to appear! But I am quite happy with the result. It's short and sweet. Now let's go win some awards! :P
Movie Spectacular - Music from the Movies - was a concert held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre on the 31st of May featuring film music performed by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. I was in charge of the background film footage projected during each piece and the promotional tv ad for the event. It was really fun editing footage from blockbuster movies while making sure that the footage tempo is synched to the music that was to be played live on that day.
Thank God everything went good and the audiences really enjoyed the show.
"I’ve always thought we have talent to sell on this island and Unlucky String, an 8.30min comedy produced and directed by Josef Cauchi makes the point excellently. Not only is it an excellent production - it tells the story of a young guitar player who sells his house to start a new career and ends up loosing everything in a string of unlucky events. Unlucky String took part in the Golden Knight Award, the National Competition and in BridgeFest, in Canada."
Unlucky String was one of the five Maltese short movies shown at St. James Cavalier (Valletta) on the 24th of April during this year's edition of the European Film Festival. Even though the film is now two years old and I have learned quite a few more things about filmmaking since then, I was really happy that it was screened in front of several local directors and actors including two foreign filmmakers. It was a great ending for Unlucky String, which now I will lay to rest.
So what's next? My next project is another short movie. More details soon.
Filmed last summer, Abjad Faham tells the story of Michael, a young police officer and his search to find whoever killed his doctor. It was the last thing I filmed using by old camera (RIP) and it took me two days of shooting and around four weeks of editing. You may believe me or not but the script and storyboards were written in about a week. Then I managed to get two days off work and filmed this little short movie.
It was my first attempt at drama and any feedback on my handling this genre would be much appreciated. While watching it note the dark colour tone that gives a little "noir" feel to the picture.
You can watch the whole short movie on its page: www.landofmovies.com/abjadfaham
YouStraw is a little side project of mine and it is a video search engine that interfaces the YouTube API. In lay terms, it searches and displays YouTube videos. It was developed using AJAX technologies which allows for a smoother browsing experience.
The Pure Brass Quintet organised a live concert at the The Grandmaster's Palace Courtyard in Valletta as part of the Malta Arts Festival 2007 and I was responsible for the background video which was to be played during their performance.
For the event I wrote and directed a short film that introduces the band and its members in an original way. This film was projected before their performance and its reception was really great.
You can watch it here
The National Film Competition is a locally organised competition in which only Maltese productions can participate. I submitted Unlucky String, Abjad Faham and Dilej, which were all screened on the night. Reception for all movies was great, especially for Unlucky String which the audience seemed to enjoy quite a lot. I was happy to hear positive feedback on my movies.
You can see me being presented the award for best minute short for Dilej.
It's been quite some time since my last short movie, Unlucky String. It's been 6 months I think. Time sure flies. I was very happy to know that people loved Unlucky String, especially the story and my attempt at creating something quite different from what I had done before. This month I managed to film another short movie, this time a one minute short ( in Maltese) since I want to try to compete in future minute short movie competitions.
Dilej's protagonist is one guy who got one problem: whenever he claps, his clap is heard moments later. There is some kind of delay, hence 'dilej' (delay in Maltese). The story tells how this guy manages to live with his problem.
The new landofmovies.com is finally online. There's still more work to do but I am willing to finish all sections in the very near future. Enjoy!
Hi everyone. Here we are. A new year and a new site for www.landofmovies.com. I wanted to build the site from scratch in order to mirror my intention to take my passion for film making one step ahead. I hope you like the new design. The old site has been scraped after 3 years online an I am willing to move some stuff you loved from it to here. Feel free to send me any suggestions or comments from you.
