The First Superhero Film Ever

Superheroes! They protect us and often have extraordinary abilities that make them special – make them super. Nowadays the superhero movies seem to continuously dominate the box office with the highest grossing movie ever (as of March 2021) being Avengers: Endgame. But what was the first movie to ever hit the silver screen?

Over hundred years ago, in 1920, the world saw the first superhero on screen and he goes by the name of Zorro. The movie was called The Mark of Zorro and it featured the masked vigilante who was created a year earlier by Johnston McCulley. The Mark of Zorro is a silent adventure film and stars Douglas Fairbanks as Zorro and it was directed by Fred Niblo who also directed the original Ben Hur (1925). It is true that Zorro has no super extraordinary abilities but his sword & acrobatic skills and his will to help those in need make him one of the early superheroes of the 20th century.
